The Sun, the Earth and the Weather

The theme for the 2019 World Meteorological Day, celebrated this past weekend, was “The Sun, the Earth and the Weather”.
Did you know that there is such a concept as agricultural meteorology?
Agricultural meteorology is concerned with the meteorological, hydrological, pedological and biological factors that affect agricultural production and with the interaction between agriculture and the environment. So now you know!
Meteorology is not the study of meteors. It is in fact the study of the weather ~ the scientific study of the Earth’s atmosphere, especially its patterns of climate and weather.
“Hydrological” refers to the waters of the earth. Pedology is the scientific study of the earth’s soils and biology, you will remember from school, is the science that deals with all forms of life, including their classification, physiology, chemistry and interactions.
Agricultural meteorology of land surfaces extends from the soil layer of the deepest plant and tree roots (pedosphere), through the air layer near the ground in which crops and trees grow and animals live, to the higher levels of the atmosphere in which processes such as the transport and dispersal of dust, seeds and pollen take place. Its fields of interest range from agricultural production, including horticulture, forestry, animal husbandry, fisheries and other forms of outdoor production and indoor production, agricultural planning , processing, transport and storage to the agrometeorological components of food security, poverty reduction and the sustainable development aspects of the livelihood of farmers/producers and the use of their products.
